1895 Day Dress
1895 Day Dress
This 1895 day dress was created for the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama second-year Specialist Study Project. The dress is based on the 1895 Day Dress Pattern from The Cut of Women’s Clothes, 1600-1930. Over the course of this six-week project, I researched and constructed this dress.
Materials: cotton satin, cotton velvet, cotton Silesia, cotton organdy.

Research
Below is the research, pattern adaptation, and construction process of the dress.

Construction
I scaled the pattern up to fit a size 34 by draping on the stand. I used hand finishing techniques to create a historically accurate exterior and interior, suitable if the interior were seen on screen. With both look and cost in mind, I chose the fabrics carefully. The dress is made from cotton satin and cotton velvet, with a cotton Silesia backing and two layers of cotton organdy to support the gigot sleeves.
